A Romania where people and nature thrive in shared well-being
Our ambition for 2030 is a Romania where biodiversity is recovering and thriving, ecosystems are protected, connected and restored where needed, and nature supports people’s well-being, climate resilience and sustainable prosperity. WWF-Romania will be accountable for making a measurable contribution towards this national ambition.
WHY THIS STRATEGY, Why now
Our 2030 Strategy connects the protection and restoration of nature with changes in the systems and relationships that determine whether conservation gains can endure and grow.
Romania’s nature supports our well-being, resilience and prosperity. Yet habitat degradation and fragmentation, unsustainable resource use, infrastructure development and climate change continue to affect ecosystems, species and communities. At the same time, the future of biodiversity is increasingly shaped by policies, institutions, food and energy systems, markets, finance and people’s ability to participate in decisions.
We need nature. BUT habitats and species face increasing pressure.
We need to involve all stakeholders. BUT communities still struggle to participate, influence and gain their rights within conservation decisions.
We need better systems. BUT policies and investments still fail to consistently value nature.
Why this matters
Romania’s natural systems are deeply connected: what happens to forests, rivers, wildlife, food production and the climate ultimately affects people too. These realities show why protecting nature alone is no longer enough and why our strategy also addresses the systems shaping its future.
Climate & energy
Romania’s transition to renewable energy must cut emissions without shifting the pressure onto valuable habitats and species.
Fauna
Romania is one of Europe’s great wildlife strongholds, home to significant populations large carnivores, sturgeon and other key species.
Communities & food
How we produce and consume food shapes both the livelihoods of rural and urban communities and the health of the landscapes we all depend on.
Water
The Danube and its floodplains sustain extraordinary biodiversity while providing people with water, food and protection from floods and drought.
Forests
Romania still holds some of Europe’s most valuable natural and old-growth forests, making their protection a responsibility of European importance.
FOUR GOALS. ONE CONNECTED STRATEGY.
To achieve our 2030 ambition, WWF-România will work through four interconnected and mutually reinforcing Goals. Biodiversity outcomes are at the heart of the strategy, supported by stronger policies and institutions, shifts in economic and financial systems, greater climate resilience, and the agency of communities and local actors.
Delivering these four Goals requires the contribution of the whole organisation, connecting conservation expertise with evidence and learning, partnerships, advocacy and communication, resource mobilisation and effective cross-team collaboration.
HOW WWF-ROMANIA HELPS CHANGE HAPPEN
We demonstrate solutions, learn from evidence, influence decisions and help effective approaches reach greater scale.
Demonstrate
Demonstrate
Develop and test practical conservation solutions in real places, together with relevant actors.
Generate evidence & learn
Generate evidence & Learn
Combine science, monitoring, local knowledge and experience to improve approaches and understand what works.
Convene & influence
Convene & Influence
Bring evidence into partnerships, public debate and decisions on policy, planning, investment and practice.
Adoption & institutionalisation
Adoption & institutionalisation
Support effective approaches to become part of policies, institutions, business practices, financing mechanisms and local development.
Replication & scale
Replication & scale
Help create the knowledge, partnerships and conditions for other actors to adopt, finance or implement effective approaches.
FOUR GOALS. ONE CONNECTED STRATEGY.
To achieve our 2030 ambition, WWF-România will work through four interconnected and mutually reinforcing Goals. Inclusive and rights-based conservation — rights, meaningful participation, agency and equitable outcomes.
Science, evidence and adaptive management — science, monitoring, local knowledge, learning and adaptation.
Partnerships and joint action — communities, public institutions, civil society, research, business, finance and the WWF Network.
Climate change — a cross-cutting pressure on nature and people across all four Goals.
Energy — a transition that must contribute to decarbonisation while safeguarding biodiversity and supporting fair outcomes.
Food — a system whose transformation can reduce a major driver of biodiversity loss while sustaining viable livelihoods.
Finance — a system that must change and an enabling mechanism for conservation, restoration and resilience.
BUILT ON 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
For more than two decades, WWF-Romania has worked from species and landscapes to policies, communities, markets and finance. Strategy 2030 builds on what we have learned from long term cooperation about turning practical conservation into lasting change.
