How a community in northern Romania has managed to live and work sustainably in the forest for centuries

Romania’s old-growth forests are among the most valuable forest ecosystems in Europe and a living example of sustainable management based on tradition and local knowledge. An original article published by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) describes how a community in Maramureș has succeeded in protecting these remarkable forests by integrating their way of life and crafts with the natural values of the forest.

In the village of Breb, local forest stewardship traditions are passed down from generation to generation: people know exactly which trees to cut and which to leave to grow, how to use horses instead of heavy machinery, and how to maintain a natural balance. This approach has led to the extensive preservation of old-growth forests and to their recognition through FSC certification, following years of collaboration between the community, foresters, and WWF.

However, this way of life is not without challenges. Young people are leaving the village, and the crafts that have kept the forest alive for centuries are at risk of disappearing. Together with WWF, the community is trying to change this course, demonstrating that the forest is worth more than just its timber — it is life, culture, and future.

In 2022, the forests in this area became the first in Romania to be certified for ecosystem services related to recreation and biodiversity, opening up new conservation opportunities and jobs for the community.

This is only part of the story. The original article by FSC offers a deeper exploration of Romania’s old-growth forests, with photographs and first-hand accounts from the field. You can discover the full story here: Safeguarding Romania’s old-growth forests.
