Discover Europe’s Lost Biodiversity, in the Danube Delta
Explore Mahmudia and the ecologically restored Carasuhat area, a true haven for lovers of slow tourism, birdwatching, and rich biodiversity. Here, visitors can step back in time to witness the vast species diversity that Europe once had, a glimpse into ecosystems flourishing in their natural abundance.
In 2016, a remarkable ecological restoration project transformed 924 hectares of farmland in Carasuhat, near Mahmudia, restoring this area to a vibrant, wetland ecosystem. The restoration has brought about a revival of flora and fauna, attracting a spectacular range of species and creating a sanctuary for wildlife lovers.
In 2023, a dyke surrounding the ecological restoration area gave way, allowing water from the restored wetland to flow onto adjacent agricultural land. This natural expansion has more than doubled the original size of the restored area, transforming it into an even larger sanctuary for nature lovers to explore and enjoy.
Why Mahmudia – Carasuhat?
• Experience Europe’s biodiversity as it Once Was: Carasuhat offers a concentrated version of the species (especially birds) of the Danube Delta. The Delta, in turn, is a unique look into Europe’s rich and diverse past, showcasing species that you will have a hard time finding anywhere on the continent. This area is a haven for hundreds of bird species, fish, reptiles, and mammals, all thriving in a balanced, natural environment.
• A birdwatcher’s paradise: With one of the highest concentrations of bird species in Europe, including rare and iconic Delta birds, Carasuhat is a dream destination for birdwatchers.
• Easy access to the heart of the Delta: While access to Mahmudia is easily done on the road, from here you will have access to any part of the Danube Delta, making it an ideal base for exploring the diverse ecosystems across this UNESCO biosphere reserve.
The Positive Impact of Ecological Restoration
The transformation of Carasuhat has brought about profound ecological benefits that resonate with both locals and nature enthusiasts:
- Enhanced Habitats and Species Diversity: Carasuhat’s wetlands now support a broad spectrum of species, with habitats for birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals all flourishing together.
- Natural Climate Resilience: The vast wetland area strengthens the Delta’s ability to withstand flooding and drought.
